12 Ways to Make Walking More Fun This Fall

I want to be someone who naturally heads out for a long walk every day, but if the entire plan is just “go get your steps,” I can suddenly find 40 other things I’d rather do.

What works better for me is giving the walk a reason. A bookstore at the end. A really good audiobook. Halloween decorations to hunt for. Somewhere new to explore. A challenge where I can actually see myself making progress.

So this fall, I’m not relying on motivation to magically appear. I’m making walking more fun on purpose.

Here are 12 ways to do it.

1. Pick a destination, not a distance

Instead of deciding you need to walk three miles, decide where you’re going. Walk to a coffee shop, bookstore, farmers market, library, Main Street, or anywhere that gives the walk a point.

2. Go on a Halloween house hunt

Once the decorations start appearing, choose a different neighborhood and walk around looking for the best houses. Giant skeletons, over-the-top porches, creepy lighting. This only gets better as October gets closer.

3. Make an audiobook “walking only”

Pick a book you genuinely want to hear and make one rule: you only get the next chapter while you’re walking.

Slightly manipulative? Yes. Effective? Also yes.

4. Make a fall photo scavenger hunt

Look for a pumpkin, a great sunset, an orange front door, a cozy porch, fall flowers, a vintage car, a dog in a sweater, or the first house that goes completely overboard for Halloween.

Suddenly you’re looking around instead of staring at your step count.

5. Walk at golden hour

Some walks don’t need another purpose.

Choose an evening, head out when the light starts getting good, and make the whole point of the walk catching the sunset.

6. Explore a new neighborhood

There are probably places near you that you’ve driven through a hundred times but never actually walked.

Try an old neighborhood, beach town, downtown area, shopping district, or little Main Street you’ve been meaning to explore.

7. Make a ridiculously good walking playlist

Not a workout playlist.

Make one that makes you want to put your sunglasses on and walk around like your life suddenly has opening credits.

Very different energy.

8. Walk somewhere you can browse

Outdoor shopping centers, antique districts, farmers markets, bookstores and cute downtown areas all count.

There is no rule saying your 10,000 steps need to happen on a trail while wearing technical athletic gear.

9. Make it a coffee-and-walk date

Grab your favorite drink and walk with your husband, a friend, your kids, or by yourself.

Anything that makes movement feel more like a little outing and less like an obligation gets my vote.

10. Give yourself a tiny mission

Mail something. Return a library book. Buy flowers. Pick up one ingredient for dinner. Photograph the sunset. Find a restaurant you want to come back to.

A tiny mission gives an ordinary walk somewhere to go.

11. Try a weekly step goal instead of daily perfection

This is one change I really like.

Instead of treating 10,000 steps every day as pass or fail, try aiming for 70,000 steps over the whole week.

Maybe Tuesday is 6,200 and Saturday is 14,000. It still counts.

You have a real goal without turning every single day into a test.

12. Make your progress visible

Your phone quietly counting steps in the background isn’t particularly exciting.

Write them down. Fill something in. Color a milestone. Check something off. Give yourself little wins along the way.

Seeing the progress build makes the challenge feel real.

Want to walk with us?

That last idea is exactly why I created Palms to Pumpkins, Bluewater Lane’s first walking challenge.

We’re starting September 13 and walking all the way to Halloween, with a goal of 70,000 steps each week. There’s a different themed tracker every week, space to record your daily steps, and something to color every time you hit another 10K.

It’s not about seven perfect 10K days.

It’s about making walking something you actually look forward to this fall.
